Of course, we'd love to think of ourselves as both. In reading an article by Douglas B. Reeves about selecting and assessing superintendents, it was evident that the information applied to more than just the 'person at the top'.

So what is A Fixer?

The Fixer is always several steps ahead of everyone in the room and has a bias for action. Let's just get it done - is their mindset. In the short term, organizations love The Fixer. The long-term implications for this are that this person never builds leadership capacity and the district is poorer for it.

What about The Multiplier?

The Multiplier is willing to share intellectual and emotional ownership of new strategies with teachers and others. This allows the process to proceed, perhaps not with lightning speed, but in a manner that is far more likely to endure.

To read more, click here:

http://www.asbj.com/MainMenuCategory/Archive/2010/September/What-Type-of-Superinendent-Do-You-Need.aspx

Strengths Based Leadership is a Fantastic Resource for Leadership Development or Retreats

Just wanted to take a minute to send a note re: Strengths Based Leadership (http://www.strengthsfinder.com).

This is an incredible, data-based tool with an assessment that identifies your top 5 strengths (out of a total of 34). Today's tip contains ideas similar to the research from StrengthsFinder re: what followers need from leaders (Trust, Compassion, Stability, Hope).

Have a great week!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

--- MANAGEMENT TIP: JULY 13, 2010 ---

4 Things Your Employees Need From You

Traditional leaders see the employee-boss relationship as a transaction: money in exchange for labor. Transformational leaders know and recognize that employees want much more than that. Here are the four things your people need to succeed:

1. Love. This may sound touchy-feely, but love simply means focused concern that is exclusively for that person's good. Show your employees you care about them and their futures.

2. Growth. No one wants to be exactly where they are forever. Create a culture that allows your people to grow and expand.

3. Contribution. To feel fulfilled, employees must know that they are contributing to the whole. Emphasize the ways that their work matters to the organization.

4. Meaning. We are meaning-seeking creatures. Summarizing your brand in a statement is a useful and often enlightening task. First, answer two important questions:

1. What do you want to be known for?
2. What results do you want to achieve in the next 12 months?

Take these two answers and put them into the following statement: I want to be known for ______ so that I can deliver ______. Once you have your statement, be sure that you are living up to it. Ask others for input on whether you are achieving your goals and whether they see your leadership brand in the same way you do.

http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2010/03/define_your_personal_leadershi.html?cm_mmc=npv-_-MANAGEMENT_TIP-_-MAY_2010-_-MTOD0524&referral=00203

Big River Chainsaw Planning Videos are Now Online

Hope this message finds you well. I am really excited to send this out. having a great school year.

Wanted to tell you about two "experimental" groups that started this year.

One Tuesday each month, educational leaders (principals, tech coordinators, assistant principals, staff development directors, etc.) get together for an hour for a virtual session over the phone (10:30 to 11:30 AM Central time). Superintendents get together on the same day (1:30 to 2:30 PM Central time).

We ask them in advance what issues or topics they need to learn more about and discuss in the session. Research summaries and a powerpoint are prepared on the topic & sent out to all participants in advance.

The original idea for the sessions was to:

1) Assemble a group of educational leaders that would like to expand their group of professional contacts across multiple states (currently MN, WI, SD).

2) Provide customized professional development in shorter sessions on needed topics with researched topics & presentation materials provided.

3) Allow busy leaders to participate without giving up travel time & time away from the job.

The response has been good & the format works despite a few reservations on my part. The groups have passionate, energetic participants that put to rest my initial concerns about working together over the phone.

Evaluations comments from participants have been reinforcing:

"I really have appreciated the powerpoint and resources made available. You get one chance to make an impression, and if that's the first impression, it may not be a good one…if your pants are on the ground." Chuck chuckled, referencing the recent audition on American Idol.

We all know the three “R”s that schools focus on. Chuck has added a fourth “R” and feels tops them all. The most important "R" that exists in every school is the relationship "R." Great principals work very hard to establish and maintain positive relationships with the student body and the staff. The positive effect of wearing a tuxedo each week is an example on what a leader can do to have an effect on their relationship with everyone in the building.

Chuck tries to get a photo or two each Tuesday with students or staff to commemorate each week as it passes. According to him, he has every vest and tie color under the sun. Beyond the pictures, Chuck recently was contacted by WCCO and a story will be airing in mid-February about Tuxedo Tuesdays.

The staff also identified the most-desired leadership style for the Principals, using the styles identified in The Leader's Window (Beck & Yeagher, 2001; Davies-Black Publishing). Interestingly enough, the staff overwhelmingly wanted the Principals to use Style 2 ("Problem-Solving"; work with school site-based teams, I frequently tell team members "You are a leader wherever you sit." I first heard that from Dr. Dick Johnson in a SpEd Admin class @ SCSU in 1986. He went on to explain that in small groups, everyone has a leadership role. Over the years, I have come to understand that each person in a small group can either be a positive leader (by contributing & affirming), a neutral leader, or a negative leader (unfocused, hard on people & easy on problems, over-emotional, etc.).

Here is a link on that topic that is a good, quick read:

Why the term "leader" should not be linked only to those in power:

http://hbsp.ed10.net/r/1AH6/CKSDK/WL8BJM/CIBEC/Z2KU8/PJ/t

Great material - happy reading!

"Have a Kleenex & Get Back to Work"

I had a very interesting conversation with the (female) head of a client's HR department. We were having breakfast with a group of #2s discussing the specific challenge of leading clever employees (bright, boundary-crossers, easily bored, can be great contributors; Goffee, R. and Gareth Jones, G. March 2007. "Leading Clever People". Harvard Business Review.).

This person told the group that she was practicing a new skill, reducing the time that some people spent in her office hoping that she would be an ear or their den mother.

She said that her new favorite phrase was "Have a kleenex & get back to work". This phrase was her new defense against time-wasters. She is a very compassionate person, and this phrase was a departure from past practice for her. I know her well enough to know that this is not bitterness or an inappropriate glib response, just a new tack to take when the issue at hand does not deserve as much time as the time-waster wants to spend on it.

For more information on the Big River Group or joining our breakfast series visit www.bigrivergroup.com and click on "Contact Us".

Hey! This blog stuff works! Thanks to Cindy H., Scott M., & Kevin M. for your coaching & making this a reality.

Last Ed blog contained a request to help out an Elementary Principal (old hockey player) that essentially moved into the AYP penalty box. He was looking for other Principals that had worked on the AYP issue.

A number of you responded & we forwarded those contacts to him. He made contact w/ two Principals who really helped out.

Next challenge: That Principal has now moved to a more specific request for assistance as identified in an e-mail to me:

Hey Bruce,

Always great to chat with you. Our specific issue is special education students not making adequate progress.

Here are some areas we are considering in our process:

1. Classroom and special education teachers must own their IEP students.
2. Parent and family support of students not making progress is a must.
3. After school EXCEL program to support only students not making progress.
4. Is the curriculum used for students on IEP's effective?
5. Close progress monitoring of students.
6. Should some students not making progress take the alternate MTAS assessment?
7. Are students receiving enough eyeball to eyeball time (w/ teachers)?

Hope this helps..keep me in the loop with your progress.

Take care,
(Name)

Please respond to this blog & let us know if you have some ideas or proven strategies to address any of those opportunities for improvement. Let's get some best practice ideas up for other educational leaders to review.
Thanks in advance & take care!

Building Bridges for Student Outcomes

One of my school district clients recently had an interesting idea. This SpEd leader wanted to bring all of the major players in the district together to plan out a better model for better serving all students.

The two planning sessions were entitled: Building Bridges for Student Outcomes.

In the sessions, the group completed the following tasks
Session 1 (three hours)
1) Briefly review applied research / best practice ideas
2) ID & review recent successes & issues
3) Develop a vision for a better system
4) ID priorities for actions
5) Review possible next steps
6) Evaluate this session

Session 2 (two hours)
1) Briefly review products from session #1
2) Develop specific goals aligned w/ new priorities
3) Develop workplans for new goals
4) Review next steps
5) Evaluate this session

The group did excellent work & came up with the following priorities for the improved system:

#1) Comprehensive, inclusive interventions & differentiation plans (pyramid including social, emotional, behavioral)

#2) Define & train to a district coaching model & implement consistently

#3) Vertical alignment of curriculum & assessments K-12 (cross content included)

#4) Comprehensive assessment system embedded in instruction (variety of methods of assessment that is fully implemented

#5) Every child reads by grade 3 @ or above grade level

#6) Coaching model continues to support full implementation with fidelity of PA (Principles of learning) & is fully implemented.

Their work in FY09 will include implementation & evaluation. Obviously, they have a lot of work ahead. But bringing the players together to plan together is an excellent start.
